Small houses challenge our notions of need as well as minimum-size standards

This is a really cool story about a guy who builds, sells and even lives in really small houses. How small? How about 100 square feet and less.

FREE POWER FOR YOUR HOUSE?

This is a interesting idea. A home power plant. What if you were able to make your own power at home or at least some of it?

Here is the text from the original article:

This week Climate Energy and Honda announced that they will bring a micro-CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system to the American market, under the trade name Freewatt(TM). Sales of the Honda-powered generator with warm-air heating system have begun in the Northeastern states, where sales are boosted by the relatively cool climate and legislation promoting net-metering, which allows owners of alternative energy systems to recover costs by feeding electricity back into the networks. Climate Energy promises to continue growth in the American market, adding a hot-water boiler system and other configurations to the product palette. Judging by unexpectedly high reader response to the recent article on the Senertec Dachs, the market is ripe for this technology.

The Freewatt is powered by Honda's GE160EV natural gas engine and produces 3.26 kilowatts of heat and 1.2 kilowatts of electricity. Although substantially less than is generated by the Senertec Dachs, the Freewatt is appropriately sized for the needs or the average single home. Similar systems have sold over 45,000 units in Japan since their introduction in 2003. The low noise levels of the Honda generator, which is compared to a refrigerator, is a strong selling point for the Freewatt. The price for Freewatt micro-CHP with warm-air heater is approximatley $13,000 installed, depending upon the complexity of the installation.

The introductory model requires electricity for start-up and operation, so it is not the solution for off-gridders or people looking for the security of generating their own heat and power in a grid crash. However, Climate Energy is developing a system which will provide up to 1.8 kilowatts of power during a black-out. No hint of plans for alternative-fuel options such as wood pellets or vegetable oils yet though.

Computer From 1954

My How the Times Have Changed

"Scientists from the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a "home computer" could look in the year 2004. However, the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admid that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work, but 50 years from now, scientific progress is expected to solve these problems. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use. "

Legality of the income tax called into question

This is a interesting article I found in the Rock River Times. A newspaper in Rockford, Illinois. This should make us all stop and think, and maybe even write, call or email our representatives.

In the early part of this century, a man named Bob Schulz asked the IRS to show him the law that says he has to pay an income tax. They ignored him time and time again. Since Article I of our Bill of Rights says that our government must answer our questions, the answer should have been forthcoming. Bob Schulz is still waiting for his answer. He has served his written questions over and over again, with no response from government.

Then came some notable tax “evasion” cases. Vernice Kuglin, a pilot for Federal Express, made the same claims as Bob Schulz, and was found not guilty by a jury in 2004. This year, a man named Whitey Harrell was also found not guilty by a jury. Mr. Harrell stated during his trial that he would gladly pay income taxes if someone would just show him the law. The jury found Mr. Harrell not guilty because the judge refused to show the jury the law, after two separate requests. An impressive video of a speech before the National Press Club by Jury Foreman Marcella Brooks is available for free viewing on the Internet.

Then, there’s the dramatic story of Ed and Elaine Brown of Plainfield, N.H. They, like Bob Schulz, have been searching in vain for the income tax law. Mr. Brown is a retired exterminator, and Mrs. Brown is a dentist with an active practice. One, or both, has been variously charged with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, tax evasion, willful failure to collect employment taxes, conspiracy to structure transactions, and structuring transactions. The Browns got their day in court last month, but were stymied when U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe made clear that he would allow the Browns to show that they honestly held unusual legal views, but would not allow them to try to persuade the jury of the accuracy of those ideas. Seeing the futility of being tried without being able to present evidence, Ed Brown simply went home and remains there today. He is refusing to return to court, and warns U.S. officials to stay away. He has publicly announced a $1,000,000 reward (real estate) if anyone can show him the law that compels him to pay income tax.

With $1,000,000 on the table, you would think that someone would find the law that compels us to pay an income tax. If you do find the law, a question arises. Will you claim the million dollars on your income taxes?

Suit: Rat died in man's mouth
Family sues troubled elderly facility Paragon Gardens
By JENIFER B. McKIM
The Orange County Register

A 90-year-old dementia patient was found last month alone in his room with a dead rat lodged in his mouth.

That's the latest allegation against the Paragon Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care facility for the elderly in Mission Viejo.

Attorneys for plaintiff Sigmund Bock filed suit against the facility Thursday saying staff ignored Bock's needs by allowing a rat infestation and then failed to supervise the mentally incapacitated patient.

"The defendants so literally ignored the needs of their residents, and most specifically Sigmund Bock, as to allow vermin in the form of a rat to become lodged in the mouth of Sigmund Block and die therein,'' the lawsuit read.

Nobody at Paragon was available for comment Thursday afternoon. An attorney for Paragon did not respond to a request for comment.

The lawsuit comes after a series of legal troubles for the facility, operated by the privately owned Sunwest Management Inc. based in Oregon.

Last year, the state Department of Social Services sued to revoke the Mission Viejo facility's license, alleging that six clients were injured and one died after improper care at the home. The company appealed and a meeting is scheduled later this month to set a hearing date.

In January, Bock's attorney Stephen Garcia filed a class action lawsuit against Sunwest, saying the company provided substandard care that failed to comply with state law. Garcia also sued Paragon after another one of his clients Troy Nelms, a 71-year-old Alzheimer's patient, walked off the facility last year and never was found.

"I've had enough of Paragon Gardens I'm hoping to shut them down,'' said Garcia. "They lost my last client. ... We want the department to step in and do something about this case."

State officials said they couldn't comment because they are in legal proceedings.
